Abstract: (8 Views)
What is called Islamic art studies in Iran today, regardless of the controversy over the title itself, has been more or less dominated by a group that refers to artistic activities in the Islamic period as sacred art or interprets it entirely with a mystical approach. In contrast, in the scientific and methodological approach to art studies, a group emphasizes the necessity of studying and understanding art in its real historical and social context and considers the words of the sacredist/traditionalist group to be free speech and devoid of evidence and historical context. In this note, this common debate in the academic space of art research in Iran is briefly reviewed, and the author disputes some of the claims of the sacredists in terms of the methodology of art studies, calling their words not art studies but a kind of art-poem or poetic description in romantic admiration of works of art in the Islamic period.
